How to Choose a Lift Chair

A lift chair (or riser recliner) can make getting in and out of a chair much easier and safer. But a lift chair that doesn’t fit you properly can be uncomfortable or even unsafe. Here’s what to look for.

1. Measure yourself

  • Seat height: sitting back in the chair, your feet should rest flat on the floor with your knees at about a right angle.
  • Seat depth: with your back against the backrest, there should be a small gap between the front of the seat and the back of your knees.
  • Seat width: you should fit comfortably without being squeezed, and be able to reach the armrests.
  • Back height: your head should be supported when reclined.

Many ranges come in petite, standard and XL sizes, such as the Pembroke Petite and LC-358 XL.

2. Single or dual motor?

In a single motor chair, the backrest and footrest move together. It’s simple to use. In a dual motor chair, they move separately, so you can raise your feet while sitting upright, or recline the back without raising your legs. Examples include the Marcos and Seagrove dual motor recliners.

3. Check the weight capacity

Every lift chair has a maximum user weight. Make sure it suits you.

4. Think about fabric and care

Consider how easy the fabric is to clean, whether it’s breathable, and whether you need a waterproof or wipeable option.

5. Look at the controls

Check you can hold and use the hand control easily. Large, clearly labelled buttons are easier for people with arthritis or low vision.

6. Plan the space

  • Measure the space, allowing room for the chair to recline and tilt forward.
  • Check there’s a power point nearby, and that the cord won’t be a trip hazard.

7. Sit in a few

Lift chair FAQs

Are lift chairs safe?

Lift chairs are designed to make standing and sitting safer, but they need to fit the user and be used correctly. If you have balance problems or a medical condition, ask an occupational therapist whether a lift chair suits you.

Can a lift chair be used by more than one person?

It can, but a chair sized for one person may not suit another. If people of very different sizes will use it, try it together before you buy.

What maintenance do lift chairs need?

Keep the area under and behind the chair clear, check the cord regularly and follow the manufacturer’s care instructions. Our technicians can help with repairs and servicing.
