Assistive Technology Assessment Clinics

With so many options for Assistive Technology on the market, it can be challenging to know what choice is going to be right for you. NovitaTech’s Assistive Technology Assessment Clinics provide a unique opportunity to try out a wide range of equipment from a large range of suppliers, to find the equipment and devices that suit you best.

About Assistive Technology Assessment Clinics

It can be very time-consuming moving from supplier to supplier trying all the different makes and models to find the right Assistive Technology for you. NovitaTech offers its Assistive Technology Assessment Clinics to save you time and frustration – with the support and expertise of NovitaTech’s highly skilled and experienced technicians and therapists. We focus on you and your needs during your individual assessment session, with access to equipment and technology from a wide range of suppliers, all in the one location.

The Assistive Technology Assessment Clinics are held at different times throughout the year – mainly in school holidays – at NovitaTech’s Assistive Technology Centre at 31 Manton Stree, Hindmarsh. Clinic sessions typically run for 60-90 minutes, and you will have sole access to our technicians and therapists during your appointment. We’ll also fit your equipment if you find something that suits you.

If you would like more information about the Assistive Technology Assessment Clinics, contact NovitaTech on 1300 668 482 or submit an online enquiry. If you already receive services and supports from Novita and NovitaTech, tell your therapist that you’re interested in an Assessment Clinic.

Bike Clinics

NovitaTech provides the opportunity for kids and adults living with disability to trial a selection of bikes and trikes of different sizes, shapes and models. We also have a range of accessories and supports which enable people with limited mobility and balance to successfully ride a bike. Adapted or specialised bikes can increase physical stability and confidence in learning to ride a bike.

At a Bike Clinic session, a therapist will assess your capacity to ride a bike, including:

  • past history of bike use
  • physical ability – Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) level; ability to stand/walk/sit, with or without support
  • range of movement
  • motivation
  • bike skills and safety.

NovitaTech’s Bike Clinics are led by a physiotherapist with expertise in paediatric disability and knowledge of cycling, with the support from technicians who have extensive experience in bike modifications to suit your exact specifications and needs. The physiotherapist will help to determine the most appropriate bike and supports for you. A bike with the required supports is then set up for you to trial to establish the most cost-effective and age-appropriate options.

Can we take home a bike to trial after?

A selection of bikes are available for a one-month trial, if we need to establish whether you enjoy riding a bike and it fits your lifestyle – which means having and riding a bike is more likely to be successful in the long term. A take-home trial bike can also help to develop your bike-riding skills, which means fewer supports might need to be recommended. An at-home trial may not be needed for everyone, as often in the clinic session your physiotherapist can find what suits you best and what modifications (if any) are required.

Walker Clinics

Walkers are Assistive Technology that can support independent mobility and movement for people living with disability that otherwise are unable to walk. There are many different types of walkers, and a wide range of accessories, so finding the right balance is essential to finding a walker that will provide the best independent movement and potential for skill and strength development. At NovitaTech’s Walker Clinic sessions, you’ll have the opportunity to work with a highly experienced physiotherapist to find the best matched walker for your needs. There may also be the opportunity to hire a walker following the clinic session so you can have a longer trial of the equipment.

Walker Clinic appointments typically run for 60-90 minutes and can be accessed through your NDIS funding, depending on your plan and goals. You may also request an assessment report be sent to your funding body if you need to have an item funded following your clinic appointment.

Powered Mobility Clinics

For kids, young people and adults living with disability, being able to move around on your own can be a key to independence. Booking into a NovitaTech Powered Mobility Clinic will give you an opportunity to explore a range of powered wheelchairs and other equipment. An experienced occupational therapist and physiotherapist will work with you to investigate different techniques for operating a powered wheelchair, including using the joystick and switch access, as well as the different drive mechanisms including mid-wheel and rear-wheel drive powered wheelchairs.

Following your clinic session, you will be given a summary report, and you may also be able to hire a powered wheelchair or other equipment for trial to enable you to further explore and develop your skills to operate a powered wheelchair and ensure it’s the best mobility option for you.

NovitaTech’s Powered Mobility Clinic appointments typically run for 90-minutes and can be assessed through NDIS funding, depending on your goals. You may also request an assessment report be provided to your funding body if you need to have an item funded following your clinic appointment.
