Mack’s Singing In His New Shower
It’s the home modification that changed everything for music loving teenager, Mack!
They call him “Mr Music”; 16-year-old Mack loves all things music. This includes an amazing ability to answer all sorts of music trivia questions. From the Beatles to Aretha Franklin, ACDC and many more icons, there isn’t much that Mack doesn’t know about music. And now that Mack has new-found independence in his modified bathroom, he’s singing all his favourite tunes in the shower!
Mack, who lives with an intellectual disability, also enjoys watching his beloved Port Power AFL team, playing basketball, swimming in his pool and playing with his two Boxer dogs, Siren and Rebel.
Achieving Independence
Now that Mack is well into his teenage years, he was starting to feel the need for privacy when showering. However, this was not possible in the family’s bathroom, as he had to step into a bath to access the shower. His mum, Julie, needed to be there to help him balance and use the tap to get the water temperature right. Enter the NovitaTech team: occupational therapist Amanda Greb and Home Modifications specialist Ben Russell, who worked together to come up with a solution to make it possible for Mack to shower by himself.
The result has been nothing short of life-changing for not only Mack but Julie and the rest of the family. It’s certainly the shower that changed everything for Mack; he can now shower by himself, which includes getting the water temperature just how he wants it. It also takes the pressure off Julie needing to be there for every shower.
Mack’s Shower
From the first time Mack used the modified shower, he said “I love Mack’s shower”. Now family and friends know it as just that. Julie says “It’s not the family’s shower – it’s Mack’s shower. It’s been an incredible confidence-booster for him and a great thing for all the family.”
Julie continues to explain “If I’m near the bathroom when it’s time for him to shower, Mack says ‘No mum – privacy!’. Now that he has realised he can do it by himself, he’s never going to let go of his independence!”
Many family members have visited just to get a look at Mack’s shower and celebrate with him because it’s such a wonderful thing for him and the entire family.
