Types of walkers and rollators
- Walking frames have four legs, or two legs and two front wheels. You lift or slide them forward, so they give the most stable support for short distances indoors. For example, the Folding Ball Walker or the Walking Frame with Front Wheels.
- Seat walkers (four-wheel rollators) roll on four wheels and have handbrakes and a seat, so you can stop and rest. The Aspire Vogue Lightweight Walker weighs about 5.3 kg, folds to 220 mm wide and has a 150 kg safe working load. The Days 102 Rollator is a lower-cost option with 6 inch wheels.
- Three-wheel walkers are narrow and easy to steer in tight spaces, but have no seat. The Redgum Tri Walker weighs 4.6 kg without its bag.
- Lightweight carbon fibre rollators are easier to lift into a car. The byACRE Carbon Ultralight weighs 4.8 kg, and the Aspire Carbon Fibre Vogue Seat Walker is another option.
- Forearm and gutter walkers let you take weight through your forearms, which suits people who can't grip or bear weight through their hands. See the Aspire Vogue Forearm Walker and the Gutter Walker with Handbrakes.
- All-terrain walkers have large wheels for grass, gravel and sand, such as the Wheeleez All Terrain Walker and the byACRE Carbon Overland.
- Heavy duty and bariatric walkers, such as the Supa Mack Bariatric Walker and the Aspire Vogue Heavy Duty Walker, have stronger frames and wider seats.
- Indoor walkers and trolleys help you carry meals and drinks around the house, such as the Adjustable Height Trolley Walker and the Scandinavian Butler Indoor Walker.
- 2-in-1 walker wheelchairs convert into a transit wheelchair when you get tired, such as the Redgum Dual Walker and the Rollz Motion. The Roamate 3-in-1 adds electric drive.
- Walkers for Parkinson's: the Rollz Rhythm Walker uses a laser line, a metronome and vibrating handles as cues to help with freezing and walking rhythm.
How to choose a walker or rollator
- Handle height: stand up straight with your arms by your sides. The handles should sit at about the height of your wrist crease, so your elbows bend slightly when you hold them.
- Where you will use it: small wheels suit smooth floors indoors; larger wheels handle footpaths, grass and gravel.
- Weight and folding: if you will lift it into a car, check the walker's weight and folded size.
- Safe working load: choose a walker rated comfortably above the user's weight.
- Seat: if you need to rest often, choose a seat walker and check the seat height.
A physiotherapist or occupational therapist can recommend the right walker and set it up for you. NovitaTech is an NDIS registered provider: walkers are often funded through the NDIS or aged care (Support at Home), and self-managed and plan-managed participants can choose Pay using NDIS Funds at checkout. You can also hire a walker in Adelaide.
