Pressure Care Mattresses and Overlays
Pressure care mattresses and overlays spread body weight and reduce pressure on the skin, which helps prevent and manage pressure injuries for people who spend long periods in bed. Shop foam, air and hybrid mattresses, mattress overlays and toppers, bariatric and paediatric mattresses, medical sheepskins, mattress protectors and cooling pads from Icon, Sovereign, Fourfront, Merit, Aurea, Zephair and more. Types of pressure care mattresses and overlays
- Foam mattresses use layers or shaped foam to spread pressure, and suit people at low to medium risk. Examples include the Icon I3 3 Layer Mattress, the Fourfront FM5 Mattress, the Sovereign SM5 Mattress and the Merit 2A Premium Medical Mattress. See all foam mattresses.
- Air mattresses use alternating or low-air-loss cells driven by a pump, for people at higher risk or with existing pressure injuries, such as the 8 Air Alternating Mattress and the Zephair ZA1000 Gentle Critical Care. See all air mattresses.
- Hybrid mattresses combine a foam base with air cells, such as the Hybrid Critical Care Air Pressure System and the Softform Premier Active 2.
- Overlays and toppers sit on top of an existing mattress, such as the Alpha Active 3 Mattress Overlay, the ActiveFloat Mattress Overlay, the ActiveX Mattress Topper Overlay and Medical Sheepskin Overlays (AS4480.1).
- Bariatric and paediatric mattresses include the Maxx Bariatric Mattress, the Icon I38 Bariatric Mattress, the Icon I3 Paediatric Mattress and the Sovereign S41000 Paediatric Mattress.
- Covers, protectors and comfort: the Fully Enclosed Mattress Cover, the Fitted Mattress Protector and the Gel Cooling Mattress Pad.
How to choose a pressure care mattress
- Pressure injury risk: a clinician will usually assess risk (for example with a Braden or Waterlow score). Higher risk generally calls for higher-specification foam or an air mattress.
- Time in bed and movement: people who can't reposition themselves need more pressure redistribution.
- Bed size and type: check the mattress fits the bed base, including adjustable and hospital-style beds.
- Weight: choose a mattress rated for the user's weight; bariatric models are available.
- Infection control: look for a waterproof, wipe-clean, vapour-permeable cover.
Mattresses should be prescribed by a nurse, occupational therapist or other clinician as part of a pressure care plan. For seating, see pressure care cushions. NovitaTech is an NDIS registered provider: pressure care mattresses are often funded through the NDIS or aged care (Support at Home), and self-managed and plan-managed participants can choose Pay using NDIS Funds at checkout.
