Switches
Assistive technology switches let people with limited movement control toys, communication devices, computers and tablets with a single press, touch, puff, bite or small muscle movement. Shop pressure switches like the Jelly Bean and Big Red, recordable communicators like the BIGmack and Step-by-Step, specialist switches for head, cheek, finger, foot, breath and bite activation, and switch interfaces, cables and covers. Clinicians can also train in the Switch Access Measure (SAM), a switch assessment developed by Novita.

Types of switches
- Pressure switches are pressed with a hand, head or other body part. The Jelly Bean Switch is a popular 6.4 cm switch with click feedback and interchangeable colour tops. The Big Red Switch gives a larger target, and the Button Switch comes in 30 mm and 50 mm sizes.
- Light-touch switches need very little force, such as the Micro Light Switch, the Switch Finger Button and the GlassOuse Touch Switch and Proximity Switch.
- Head and cheek switches: the soft foam Pillow Switch suits head or cheek activation.
- Specialist switches respond to other movements: the Twitch Switch detects small muscle movements, and the GlassOuse Puff Switch, Bite Switch and Foot Switch use breath, bite and foot control. We recommend a clinical assessment before buying a puff switch.
- Recordable communicators speak a recorded message when pressed: the BIGmack plays one message, and the BIG Step-by-Step and LITTLE Step-by-Step play a sequence of messages.
- Interfaces and accessories: the Crick USB Switch Box connects switches to a computer, plus extension cables, covers and switch-adapted toys.
How to choose a switch
- Find a reliable movement: the best switch site is a movement the person can make on purpose, repeatedly, without tiring.
- Target size and force: larger targets are easier to hit; light-touch switches suit people with little strength.
- Feedback: a click, light or vibration helps the user know the switch has activated.
- Mounting: a switch has to be held in the right place. See our Udaption mounting systems.
- What it will control: check the connection (usually a 3.5 mm jack) or use a switch interface for computers and tablets.
A speech pathologist or occupational therapist can assess switch access. Learn more about augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) at NovitaTech. NovitaTech is an NDIS registered provider: switches are often funded through the NDIS, and self-managed and plan-managed participants can choose Pay using NDIS Funds at checkout.
