Types of hoist slings
- General purpose slings are the everyday choice for bed, chair and floor transfers, such as the General Purpose Sling and the Allegro General Purpose Sling. Choose a version with head support if the person needs it, such as the General Purpose with Head Support Sling.
- Hygiene and toileting slings have a cut-away design for access to clothing and toileting, such as the Hygiene Sling, the Access Hygiene Loop Sling and the Toileting Low Fabric Sling.
- Mesh slings drain and dry quickly, so they suit showering and bathing. See the Elevate Loop Mesh Sling and the Mesh Full Body Sling.
- Standing and walking slings are used with stand-aid lifters. For the Arjo Sara Plus, choose the Arjo Sara Plus Standing Sling (190 kg safe working load) or the Arjo Sara Plus Walking Sling. Other options include the Deluxe Standing Sling and the Walking Sling.
- Low-friction and all-day slings can stay under the person while seated, such as the Parasilk All Day Deluxe Sling.
- Specialist slings include the Amputee Sling, the Junior Sling for children and the Bariatric Hammock Sling.
How to choose a sling
- Match the hoist: check whether your hoist's spreader bar takes loop or clip slings, and how many attachment points it has.
- Size: slings come in sizes from small to extra large. Use the manufacturer's sizing chart; a sling that is too big or too small is unsafe.
- Head support: choose a high-back sling with head support if the person has limited head or trunk control.
- Task: general purpose for everyday transfers, hygiene for toileting, mesh for bathing, standing slings for stand-aids.
- Safe working load: make sure the sling, hoist and spreader bar are all rated for the person's weight.
- Care: check labels and stitching regularly, follow washing instructions and replace worn slings.
